The Big University Cover Up

To follow on from my last post on racism in universities, this post looks at the university cover up to save face.

The following comes from an article written by

Universities are failing to address tens of thousands of racist incidents every year because they are in denial about the scale of the problem, the government’s equality watchdog has warned. So even the government have been involved, but still these establishments fail.

An inquiry by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) found that about a quarter of minority ethnic students, including non-British white students, said they had experienced racial harassment since the start of their course.

The report, Tackling Racial Harassment: Universities Challenged, also found 8% of all students surveyed suffered racial harassment in the first six months of the last academic year, which amounted to about 180,000 students across the UK.

A third of those said they reported racist incidents to their university, the equivalent of 60,000 students nationwide. Yet a separate survey of 141 universities by the body found only 920 formal complaints of racism by students and staff recorded between September 2015 and February 2019. Of these, 560 were made by students, equivalent to only about 80 complaints every six months.

In another article taken SI News tilted: How UK universities should deal with racial harassment on campus.

Close to one in four students from minority backgrounds have been racially harassed since starting their course. One in five have been physically attacked. More than half (56 percent) have experienced racist name-calling, insults and jokes. Muslim students have reported being victims of racism, being offensively referred to as “terrorists” or feeling the need to downplay or hide their religious identity.

This racism problem is wide spread over the UK universities and until the powers to be get off the backsides and accept that they have a issues in their establishment this problem is not going to go away.
